You know the world is shrinking.

The ecomony. The ice caps. Lily Tomlin circa 1981. In many cases such as these, shrinkage is certainly undesirable. My bank account certainly feels like it is shrinking. My attention span often seems like it is losing bits here and there. Honey, I’m sorry but I shrunk the kids, and to make matters worse, now we have add the concern of where the polar bears are going to live onto all of the things we have to think about these days. It’s exhausting.

But I’m here to put a positive spin on things. I like to think I live my life with the glass-half-full outlook, except for that day I got a bill from the IRS saying I owed them an exorbitant amount of money…that day the glass fell to the ground, shattered everywhere and I stepped all in it. There’s nothing more infuriating these days than paying money that you know you deserve more. But I digress…

A shrinking world can be seen in a good way. Take social networking for example. These structures, like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc., allow for you to close the gap between you and those around you, be they friends, family, coworkers or just some random person you thought was attraction based on their profile picture. And there is certainly nothing wrong with wanting to close the gap, especially if it’s for someone really special—like my beloved Ray LaMontagne. I would not have a problem shrinking a little closer to him as he is my favorite musician at this stage in my life. Enter the classic six degrees of separation. Everyone knows they are connected to Kevin Bacon, but through the six degrees of separation, it is believed that you are connected to any one in the world through six other contacts. Therefore, Ray LaMontagne and I are already connected. Let’s see if I can figure out how.

Alright, Ray LaMontagne is connected to Ethan Johns (1) who has been the producer for many of his albums. Ethan Johns was also the producer for many of Ryan Adams’ (2) records. Ryan Adams recently married actress and singer Mandy Moore (3). Mandy Moore grew up in Orlando and was family friends with my co-worker Kendall’s friend Kim (4). And obviously, Kendall is my co-worker and she makes 5. I guess that’s where it stops. So in all actuality we are closer than six degrees, which just boils down to the fact that Ray LaMontagne and I are best friends. So should come see us both on Tuesday, April 28th as my buddy Ray takes the stage for what will certainly be one hell of concert.
