I wonder if writing a blog about blogs is like defining a word by using it in the definition. Like a completely circular path of thinking, really getting you nowhere different then where you began. A blog about blogs leads you really just to blogs, like defining a word by using the said word really just brings you back to the word. Hmm…that reminds me of a horoscope I read once. I didn’t quite understand it but trusted that there was some sort of precious piece of knowledge backing it up.
But you know—that is really neither here nor there; it was merely the catalytic thought for this documented stream of consciousness. Enjoy this sneak peek into my brain.
These days, one has the ability to stay up-to-date and in-touch with countless outlets of information, seemingly all at the same time. You get to the point where you need to filter all the mess that is thrown at you to get down to the nitty gritty of what is really important to you.
So you must ask yourself, what is important to you?
Are you worried about what City Council is doing? What about the latest trends in the market? Whether shaving your eyebrows is in or out? (<--A serious “article” I saw, but did not click on, today on Yahoo.) Do you care what new restaurants are popping up on the Southside. Or what are those darling K-Girls doing?
We know you care about that last one…we all care about that last one.
Twitter gives us the opportunity to decide who we follow. Facebook gives us the option to be a “fan” of someone or something. We choose our “friends” on MySpace. And they are all just nicely bundled together within these sites—one-stop shops for social networking. I like to think good old timey blogs are a little different. These might be our generation’s version of reading the newspaper. Instead of waking up in the morning and reaching for that black and white and read all over, we’re turning to the ones and zeros. I’ll give those media traditionalists a moment to shudder.
Like pulling my favorite section from the paper, I’ve got my favorite blogs I choose to visit almost on a daily basis. What I choose to read says something about me. It is what I am interested in, what I want to learn more about and it is what affects me, my friends and my family…in more than 140 characters. Finding a good blog sometimes is like breaking out that old metal detector at the beach, sifting through a lot of blah for a shiny bit of a-ha! Corny. I know.
Some of my faves are curbly.com, an always resourceful do-it-yourself blog where I get inspiration for craftiness I will never do. Another is notmartha.org, which is another DYI artsy blog I assume is breaking the Martha Stewart mold. JacksonvilleConfidential.com is pretty interesting too. UrbanJacksonville is also a fan favorite with me and my co-workers.
What are some of your favorite blogs? Is there something we should be reading? Share the wealth—let us know!
P.S. So maybe a blog about blogs just brings you more blogs, but you know what, I’ll take it.
