For more than 80 years, the Florida Theatre has served as the centerpiece for Jacksonville’s cultural and artistic heritage. During those eight decades the Theatre has provided a home for thousands upon thousands of arts and entertainment experiences for multiple generations. The beauty and significance of our Theatre is unparalleled in our community - and we must do everything we can now to ensure that future generations receive the benefit of all the Theatre has to offer.
The Board of Directors and staff have launched a capital campaign that will provide for the future preservation, maintenance and advancement of our great Theatre. The capital campaign will consist of three phases: funding during Phase I will enable us to undertake critical structural maintenance and improvements; Phase II will provide essential technological upgrades that will uplift the Theatre and enhance its ability to produce the highest quality programming, and; the final phase will build a permanent endowment to support the Theatre’s ability to offer outstanding and innovative programming for our entire community in perpetuity.

Our Goal
Overall Goal: $5,000,000
Endowment Funds: $3,312,444 (68.9%)
Repairs/Maintenance/Preservation: $534,050 (11.1%)
Equipment/Expansion of Production Capabilities: $444,230 (9.2%)
Campaign Costs and Other: $515,943 (10.7%)
Contingency: $193,333 (4%)
Florida Theatre Preservation Fund
Goal: $1,079,120
Held within The Community Foundation, the Preservation Fund was created to support the preservation and maintenance of the Florida Theatre. The campaign objective is to build the fund to a level where earnings are sufficient to meet the annual costs of routine repairs and maintenance. Continued growth of the fund principal and regular contributions from ticket surcharges will enable the fund’s earnings to keep pace with rising maintenance costs in perpetuity.
Florida Theatre General Endowment Fund
Goal: $1,267,105
Also held within The Community Foundation, the General Endowment Fund is designated to support the Theatre’s ongoing operations and, specifically, its services to the community. The campaign objective is to increase the fund principal to a level where annual earnings are equivalent to the amount of rent subsidy provided to the Theatre’s many not-for-profit user groups. This will ensure the Theatre’s continued support of myriad community organizations.
Florida Theatre Program Endowment
Goal: $966,218
Purposes/Objective: Held by the Theatre, this board-designated fund is intended to provide a financial cushion against possible losses on performances and to support future expansion of arts and educational programming. The fund’s balance on September 30, 2007 was $33,782. The campaign objective is to increase this endowment to a minimum of $1 million so that annual earnings are sufficient to support 6-8 new or financially risky performance events each season.
Repairs, Maintenance and Preservation
Goal: $534,050
The preservation of this magnificent historical, architectural and cultural treasure for future generations remains our highest priority. Over and above the routine annual costs addressed by the growth of our Preservation Fund, the Theatre is in need of an infusion of capital to restore many decorative elements and improve the comfort and safety of audiences and artists alike. Among the many projects included in this component of the campaign are:
- Repairs to deteriorating stage floor
- Improvements/upgrades to backstage areas and dressing rooms
- Upgrades to HVAC System
- Carpet replacement throughout lobbies and auditorium
- Restorative plaster and paint work
Production Equipment
Goal: $444,230
Funds raised for new stage equipment will enable the Theatre to keep pace with advancing production technology, better meet the increasingly complex technical needs of visiting artists and elevate the quality of events staged by its many community partners. Major needs include:
- Replacement of aging stage lights (many purchased in 1983)
- Expansion of lighting dimmer system capabilities
- Replacement of stage curtains and draperies
- Replacement of main speaker and amplifier system
- Acquisition of stage monitor system
Campaign Costs and Other
Goal: $515,943
Because this will be a board and staff driven campaign that will not utilize outside professional fund raising counsel, direct costs will be kept at a minimum – approximately 5.3% of the overall goal. Included in this component of the campaign are:
- Campaign planning, coordination, collateral materials
- Operating support during renovations
- Sidewalk Improvements
- Donor recognition costs and other
