Once the application is approved, the volunteer manual and current event calendar will be emailed to you, along with instructions on volunteering for events. If an event is full or canceled, management will let you know. For the first event or two, you will be assigned a veteran usher until you are comfortable with your duties.

All new volunteers must attend an in-depth orientation within their first year of service.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

Volunteering at the Florida Theatre is a privilege. Volunteer ushers are expected to understand the seating arrangements, wear the appropriate attire, take patrons to their (reserved) seats, stand and climb steps, understand event information, direct people to the restrooms and concessions, and help prepare programs for events. Qualified ushers will take or scan tickets and direct patrons.

You must also show up by your call time, which is generally 90 minutes before the event actually starts. (Note: Ushers coming in later than the assigned call time could be sent home at the discretion of the management.) Each volunteer should be capable of standing until each show begins and, for sold-out shows, will be required to stand until released from duty. Ushers are not allowed to use cell phones while on duty.

HOW MANY SHOWS MUST AN USHER WORK?

To maintain active status as a volunteer usher, volunteers must work at least three events every two months on average and two dance recitals annually.

Volunteers must also attend one usher refresher training annually to maintain active status.

Any ushers who are not maintaining these requirements will be released from the volunteer group and will need to wait until the start of the season to join again as a new usher.

HOW LONG DO USHERS STAY FOR EACH PERFORMANCE?

Volunteer ushers are typically asked to be on-site 90 minutes before curtain time unless otherwise indicated. Ushers should expect to stay for the entire performance, although some volunteers will usually be released after intermission as long as enough volunteers cover the closing positions.
